DepEd on watch vs learning loss due to missed school days

The Department of Education is currently assessing students' missed school days to prevent possible learning loss. There have already been several class suspensions this year, some lasting up to a week, due to the current typhoon season being enhanced by La Niña and other natural calamities nationwide.

DepEd secretary Sonny Angara ordered a thorough assessment, starting with collating figures on the number of classes suspended and the number of make-up classes needed. Sec. Angara worries that learners are already missing out and might not recover.1

Modular and online distance learning is usually implemented as a possible alternative to class suspensions so that students can continue to learn. These are also being considered to catch up with the missed school days.

It is up to the school principals to implement make-up or additional Saturday classes. Angara said principals and teachers know what can be done in their respective schools and the limitations of each option.2

Classes in Luzon were suspended until Friday by Malacañang due to the onslaught of severe tropical storm Kristine.3 Some schools are still being used as evacuation centers while several have been destroyed due to the typhoon.
